What is LUPUS?

Lupus is a continuous disorder of the immune system. The immune system’s cells attack the healthy tissues, leading to tissue inflammations and lesions. The symptoms can be limited to skin area, but most of the times Lupus causes internal problems too, such as articular pains. In severe cases, it can also affect the heart, kidneys and other vital organs.

What are Lupus symptoms?

Articular pains

Articular and muscular pains are, most of the times, the first sign of Lupus. The pain tends to appear on both sides of the body, especially in the hand, finger and knees joints area. Joints may seem inflamed and warm, but, opposite to rheumatic arthritis, Lupus does not cause permanent articular pains.

Skin rashes

Lupus can be identified by cheek and nose butterfly shaped rash. Other regular skin problems include sun sensitivity, red spots and violent rashes on area such as face, neckline or hands. Some persons may even have mouth rashes.

Nail modifications

Lupus triggers the cracking or breaking of the nails. These can turn out with red or blue spots at their base.

Fever and fatigue

Most people suffering from Lupus experiment a certain degree of fatigue. In many cases, it is harsh enough that it interferes with the other daily activities. Most patients also experience fever, but inexplicable fever can be an alarm sign only for certain people.

Photophobia (Light sensitivity)

Many persons suffering from Lupus are highly sensitive to sunlight and other forms of UV light. A day at the beach can trigger a skin rash in the areas exposed to the sun and may worsen the other symptoms.

Hair loss

Lupus symptoms tend to appear and disappear, leading possibly to hair loss.

Raynaud

Some persons suffering from Lupus can develop another disease, called Raynaud. In this case, the persons who are affected experience toes and finger pains, numbing, stinging or emotional distress. This happens when the small blood vessels limit the blood stream in a certain area. During a stroke, toes and fingers can turn white or blue. People can suffer from Raynaud without suffering from Lupus or other complications.

Lupus types

When we refer to Lupus, usually we point to Systemic Erythematous Lupus, for it is the most frequent and aggravated form of this condition. All in all, there are also other forms of Lupus: Cutaneous Erythematous Lupus - which is limited to skin and does not affect other organs - it manifests through circular rashes.
